DEEP SUSHI

Updated: Mar 5, 2018

DEEP SUSHI bar and restaurant in The MISSION, SF @Church and 30TH -

An opportunity to design/fabricate and collaborate with the client

on all the elements including bar, tables, seating, flooring, wall treatments,

lighting, art and stainless commercial kitchen details. We were fortunate

to have an understanding and trust with the client that each element would be

approached as a rough-concept art piece, experimenting with a

variety of materials and finishes with not necessarily

knowing the exact outcome until completion. The project included

combinations of sculpting wood, steel, ceramics, mixing concrete,

pouring resins, along with natural elements, such as bamboo,

to create a visually fluid experience in an intimate setting,

a small back room bar and 12- table dining area in the front.

The bar: 1/2' square hot-rolled steel, (TIG -welded) framework, four separate sections.

The frame sections were then wrapped in clear shrink wrap, followed by mixing

two-part amber/natural epoxy resin, then pouring the resin into the shrink wrapped sections

of the frame. Once the resin was solid and cured, the shrink wrap was removed,

exposed and having set with the texture of the wrinkled shrink wrap. LED lighting

is used to illuminate the structure and installed on location during the assembly.

The tables: rectangular steel tubing bases, Teak wood tops, marine grade clear finish..

Bench seating: Teak wood structure topped with cushions made with

white perforated auto headliner material.

Concrete and steel foot rests were made for the bar and drink ledge areas.

Dining tables: Fabricated cold-rolled steel bases, Tops are 3/4" thick birch plywood

topped with perforated white cotton, followed by three layers of natural/amber

epoxy resin.

The wall treatment is natural/grey grout, troweled on to give the appearance of

unfinished concrete.

The wall art is natural bamboo framed in dark hot-rolled steel.

Sushi bar: plywood construction, fabricated stainless top (TIG-welded, #4 grained+

orbital sanded finish.) Upper sneeze guards are steel-framed Lumicite panels.

Stools: Fabricated cold-rolled steel bases, top seats are 1" thick clear acrylic,

machined and polished.

Custom floor-based light fixture: Steel tripod frame. Shade: 10" dia. aluminum tubing

with laminated Beech wood exterior.

Wheat grass art display: Steel fabricated floor to ceiling tension pole,

kiln-fired ceramic bowls to hold the wheat grass.

"Sign-in at the door", fabricated steel and aluminum, floor to ceiling tension pole,

LED lighting.
